The proper identification of shank types and sizes is
of extreme importance. The shank being the portion of the tool above the
round collar which fits into the pavement breaker. In the paving breaker
line, sizes are fairly well standardized in hammers of comparable size
and weight. Options prevail which allow for more than one shank in a particular
style hammer. Standard shank sizes, all hexagonal, are 7/8" x 3-1/4",
1" x 4-1/4", 1-1/8" x 6", and 1-1/4" x 6".
Most items are available in standard hexagon carbon
steel grade. However, certain items such as narrow chisels, moil points,
3" chisels, and SuperKut chisels are available in the super service
grade made from round steel for extra strength and longer service.
Most of the tools referred to were designed for a specific
purpose, although moil points and narrow chisels are the most popular
all-purpose tool used for general demolition work.
The 3" CHISEL
is used for concrete demolition work, asphalt cutting and removal of deteriorating
concrete on bridge decks.
The 5" ASPHALT CUTTER
is primarily for cutting asphalt pavement and should not be used as a
concrete demolition tool.
The ASPHALT CONCRETE WEDGE,
a rugged tool for severe service is used for cutting asphalt pavement
with concrete or cobblestones beneath the surface.
The BUSHING TOOL
with its toothed face is for leveling concrete walls or floors; also for
roughing a concrete surface to produce a desired finish.
CARBIDE TIPPED DRILLS
are used in pneumatic rotary percussion drills and will drill hundreds
of holes in granite with a greater quantity in softer stone and concrete.
The CLAY SPADE, as
the name implies, is for general excavation where hard clay or "hard
pan" is encountered. The 1-1/8" and 1-1/4" shanks are used
with 60 lb. and 90 lb. breakers for trench digging and trimming. The standard
blade width is 5-1/2" with a 4-1/2" width option.
The DIGGING CHISEL
is used for cutting through asphalt pavement for deeper penetration or
where digging in hard ground is encountered. It can be used for cutting
sod for underground cable installation.
The FROST WEDGE is
primarily for cutting through frozen ground. The proper way to use this
tool is to start an opening and then peel away the ground with its long
tapered blade.
The FORM PIN / RAILROAD
SPIKE DRIVER is made with a shallow socket to drive anchoring pins
and spikes.
The GROUND ROD DRIVER
is made with a deep socket, in various sizes, for driving grounding rods
as used by electrical contractors and public utilities.
PIPE DRIVERS are
made to drive a particular pipe size under driveways or walkways. Used
by gas companies and utility contractors.
The ROCK BREAKER
is used in a 2" drilled hole for breaking boulders or concrete. Its
use is similar to the splitting wedge but the direction of the split cannot
be controlled.
The SHEATHING DRIVER SHOE
is used for driving 2" or 3" wood trench sheathing and made
for use with the tapered shank.
The SPLITTING WEDGE
with SHIMS is used in a drilled hole
for controlling splitting of rock or concrete. The two shims are placed
in a 2" drilled hole at least 12" deep, with the holes in line
with the direction of the desired split. The wedge is then driven into
this opening with a paving breaker and the break is quickly accomplished.
The SUPERKUT CHISEL
is designed especially for breaking concrete. It will break concrete faster
with less effort and with less frequent need for resharpening. It is faster
because its wedge shape and rounded cutting edge provides easier penetration,
and breaks larger sections of concrete.
TAMPING PADS are
round or square shaped and used with a DETACHABLE
SHANK. The round pads are primarily for backfill tamping while
the square pads are used for surface tamping on asphalt pavement or dirt.
